Critical Engagements and the Honors Program will co-host a trip to Detroit for students and alumni on October 24, 2026. It features guided tours of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and a Detroit neighborhood. Round-trip bus and museum tickets are provided for all students.

Dr. Catherine Cangany, Jewish Historical Society of Michigan

Jewish mobsters ran Detroit during Prohibition (1920-1933).  Known for shocking violence and vicious turf wars, the untouchable Purples were also emblematic of the Detroit neighborhood they called home: scrappy, resourceful, innovative, and proudly Jewish.  And yet, the Purples remained sharply at odds with local Jewish communities, which endured shame and retaliatory antisemitism for the Purples’ actions in Detroit and mid-Michigan.

It features a guided tour of the Detroit Institute for the Arts and historic Detroit communities. Round-trip bus and museum tickets are provided for all students. The bus will return to Mount Pleasant after the afternoon city tour. Registration details coming soon!
